How to set up your points program

With points, each purchase adds points based on what the customer spends, and they spend those points on a rewards menu you build. You choose points during sign-up, and later edit them from Program, in the Menu, or with Edit program at the bottom of the Dashboard. The editor has three steps: Points, Rewards and Activate. The card preview shows one stop on its progress bar for each reward.

A business uses one mechanic at a time. If your stamp card is active, opening the points editor first explains what changes. Nothing changes until you activate the program: then the stamp card turns off, and your customers' stamps stay saved.

How much spending earns a point

The Spend that earns 1 point field is the rule: with 1, every dollar spent earns 1 point, counted on the net amount of the purchase. Pick a round number customers can work out in their heads. To size it, use your average ticket: at $20 a visit and 1 point per dollar, a regular earns 20 points a visit, and a 200-point reward takes ten visits.

If you chose points per visit at sign-up, the editor tells you so, and spend per point isn't used.

When points expire

Point expiry (months) counts from the day each point is earned. Points not used in that time come off automatically, and the customer sees it on their card with the date. Points expire in batches: March's points expire before April's, and redemptions use the ones that expire first.

The rewards menu

Each reward has a Reward name, the Points it costs and What the customer gets:

  • Free item: type the item you hand over, or pick it from your catalog if you set one up.
  • Percentage discount, with an optional cap per use.
  • Money discount: a fixed amount off the purchase.

Add more with + Add reward. Two or three rewards at different levels work better than one: a close one, so customers redeem early and see how it works, and a bigger one worth waiting for. On percentage discounts, the cap keeps a large ticket from eating your margin. When the menu is ready, tap Activate program.

Redeeming at the register

In the Charge step, the register shows the customer's rewards and how many points each one still needs. If they pick one, the discount comes off the total or the register tells you which item to hand over, and the points are taken when you charge. For a customer who only came for their reward, use Redeem a reward without a sale. Both can be undone, and the points go back to their balance.

How to tell if it's set up right

A rule of thumb: the program shouldn't cost more than 10% of your gross profit. Add up what the rewards you give in a month are worth and compare it with what you made. If it's over, raise the point cost of the most popular reward or lower the discount.
